ITALY DEPUTY FOREIGN MINISTER GIRO: POPULISM A RISK IN THE EU DESPITE MACRON

“Emmanuel Macron’s victory is good news for Europe, but populism remains a real danger” Mario Giro, Deputy Foreign Minister of Italy, told DIRE news agency on the occasion of the Europe Day. In the interview Giro also said: “The roots of Europe are Christian, as Pope Francis often remembers, but the history of the Continent is complex and plural; the Greco-Roman legacy and the Enlightenment are also fundamental”.

AN APPEAL TO TRUMP: US SHOULDN’T DISENGAGE FROM WORLWIDE COOPERATION

“It would be a serious mistake if US president Donald Trump went ahead with his project to disengage from worldwide co-operation and funding to multilateral organizations”: that’s according to Italian secretary for Foreign Affairs Benedetto Della Vedova. In an interview with DIRE news agency Della Vedova stressed that the “economic success” and the status of “world power” of the United States turned out to be a result of its capacity to help other countries, a distinctive sign of American foreign policy “at least since World War Two”.

SUU KYI TO BURMESE MIGRANTS: COME BACK HOME

Aung San Suu Kyi, former Nobel Prize and State Councilor of Myanmar, attended an international conference in Rome on women and migrants together with the Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni. “Myanmar is a land of immigrants and emigrants” she said. “It is our responsibility to improve their living conditions, and allow those who moved to foreign countries to come back home”. Suu Kyi appealed to Burmese migrants: “We are waiting for you with open arms; Be grateful to the States that have welcomed you”.

JORDAN, OFFICE OF THE ITALIAN COOPERATION INAUGURATED IN AMMAN

Helping Jordan to cope with the influx of Syrian refugees: that is the commitment stressed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) on the occasion of the inauguration of its headquarters in Amman. Imad Fakhoury, Minister for International Cooperation of Jordan: “Italy has always been an important and indispensable partner. The opening of this office will help implement the Italian aid program for the years 2017-2019”.

MOZAMBIQUE OPPOSITION EXTENDS TRUCE INDEFINITELY

“It is not the end of the war but the beginning of its end”, Afonso Dhlakama, head of the opposition Renamo party, said after announcing a truce with the Maputo government. Mozambique is recovering from a civil war that ended in 1992 but was followed by new waves of violence, particularly at the time of the 2014 elections won by the Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo).
