 TEACHERS CAMPAIGN FOR MIGRANTS RIGHTS, “IUS SOLI” BILL

Thousands of teachers who joined a campaign for the “ius soli”, latin for law of the soil, will wear a white, red and green ribbon to emphasize their determination to consider all their students Italian citizens. This will happen on October 3, the National Day in remembrance of victims of emigration. The initiative was launched by Franco Lorenzoni, a teacher, and Eraldo Affinati, a writer, with the aim to secure the rights of 800,000 underage immigrants in Italy.

COOPERATION. 27 CANDIDATES RUN FOR VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Voting for the Volunteer of the Year Award, set up by Focsiv, the Federation of Catholic NGOs, has begun. The online poll will last until October 6th. Twenty-seven candidates will run for three categories: international volunteer, young European volunteer and volunteer of the South. Commitment to an “integral human development”, in the spirit of Pope Francis encyclical ‘Laudato si’ is likely to turn out to be key for winning the awards.

FUND TO SUPPORT FIGHT AGAINST DESERTIFICATION

A special fund to combat desertification was established during the 13th Summit of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification which was held in Ordos, China, this month. The fund has an initial allocation of $ 300 million and will be made available to governments. According to data presented at the summit, today in the world a billion and 300 million people are affected by drought and other phenomena that contribute to the impoverishment of soils and make them arid.


INDIA GETS TRIBAL UNIVERSITY, FREE FOR 25 THOUSANDS STUDENTS

The first tribal university in the world is Indian. This was confirmed by an official recognition of the Ministry of Human Development of the government of Narendra Modi. The Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences offers education, boarding and free accommodation from elementary to university to 25,000 students from local tribes. “A quality education changes the future of boys, girls and rural communities as a whole”, Anurag Dash, director of the Institute, told DIRE News Agency.

PHILIPPINES. PRAYER FOR PEACE IN MINDANAO HELD IN ROME

A prayer for peace in Mindanao, an island in the South of the Philippines where an armed conflict that has caused 360,000 displaced people since May, was held in the basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, in Rome. The prayer, promoted by the Community of Sant’Egidio, was attended by Italian citizens as well as Filipino migrants. Together they heard testimonies from Marawi, a town where the army is fighting groups which claimed loyalty to the the so called Islamic state.
